Avago Technologies recently announced two high-linear power-amplifier (PA) modules that were optimized for low power consumption and improved signal quality in 2GHz WiMAX, WiFi, and LTE applications. Housed in a miniature 5 by 5 by 0.85 mm package, the PA is well suited for use as a final stage PA in high-power applications in the 2300 to 2700MHz range.

Europe’s first sub-GHz 802.15/ZigBee module also supports China’s operating frequencies, features a built-in U.FL antenna.
Adaptive Network Solutions has unveiled its new Sub-1 GHz IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee RF module at the Embedded World 2010 in Nuremberg, Germany. The new ultra-sensitive @ANY900-2 module is designed to operate in the ISM bands 915 MHz in the US, 868 MHz in Europe and 783 MHz in China. This Sub-1 GHz ZigBee module features a built-in U.FL antenna connector that enables rapid design-in, using a different external antenna for every application and thus providing greater flexibility for the developers. The range and battery life offered...

I just heard from Hittite Microwave Corporation that they’ve introduced a line of tunable filters that can be used for pre-selection in multi-band communication systems, wideband radar, and in test and measurement equipment. If these are areas that you work in, check out the specs below.

The recent 7.0 Mw earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010 was followed by the 8.8 Mw event on 7 February 2010 in Chile (the seventh largest in recorded history). In turn, this was followed by a 5.9 Mw quake in Turkey on 8 March 2010. Should we worry about the San Andreas Fault?

I recently wrote about the low-power battle between the 8-bit Micochip PIC and 16-bit TI MSP430. In retrospect I should have included Energy Micro’s 32-bit EFM32 “Tiny Gecko” MCUs in the showdown. These ARM Cortex-M3 based MCUs have sub-$1 prices and amazing power numbers. Here’s what energy Micro claims for the EFM32:
180 µA/MHz while running applications from Flash memory
Shutoff mode with only 20 nA current consumption
Energy Modes with only 2 µs wake-up time

I just finished reading "A Crack in The Edge of the World – America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906" by Simon Winchester. In addition to discovering all sorts of facts about the earthquake itself, I learned a whole lot of stuff about a whole lot of stuff.

Home automation protocol stacks will make Smart Home/Smart Grid applications easier and less costly to develop.
The ZigBee Alliance, has announced two of its popular standards, ZigBee Home Automation and ZigBee Remote Control, are now available for public download. The enhanced ZigBee Home Automation public application profile, announced in August 2009, features expanded security and device support. Since ZigBee is one of the major players in the both building automation and Smart Building/Smart Grid markets, making information about these important protocol extensions will help developers evaluate how WiMax stacks up against competing technologies like Z-Wave and other proprietary 802.15 air...
