My old Chum Jay Dowling (leader of the TechBites Gray Code and LFSR communities) just pointed me at a jolly interesting do-it-yourself project that has me poised to order the parts.
I love this sort of stuff. It seems that a guy called Rick Crammond has designed a spooky sound generator. This is a real simple design requiring very few parts, but it looks amazingly cool (Click Here to see the original article and video).

At its heart is a a simple crystal radio circuit whose output is connected to a PC's sound-in jack. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) software on the PC allow you to create some wonderful real-time sound effects!
Using this little scamp, you can detect lightning and predict storms, make freaky music, and even hear what appear to be disembodied spirit voices.
What I really like is that the author has provided a list of the part numbers (which makes it easy to order them online) and a complete set of step-by-step construction instructions. As soon as I get a little free time, I can definitely see me making one of these...

Anything Tesla is cool
And it's from a Tesla patent so it's got to be cool.
